Tweets,

Yesterday 13 of us enjoyed a great morning at Nisqually. The weather was
great and the birds were out.

The highlights included a PECTORAL SANDPIPER on the almost pond before the
twin barns and 4 WILSON'S PHALAROPES out beyond the twin barns toward
McAllister Creek, 2 of which were engaged in mating activity. We also had a
pair of WILSON'S SNIPE displaying over the parking lot as we started the walk.

Young geese and mallards were about and we had a couple of late GADWALL on
what little water is still available beside the pond at the visitor
center. It appears the refuge is drawing down the ponds to facilitate the
destruction of the outer dike and construction of the new dike.

We wound up with 5 shorebirds species that included KILLDEER and GREATER
YELLOWLEGS in addition to the 3 species mentioned above. We had all 3
pigeon species and 4 of the 5 swallows missing only NORTHEN ROUGH-WINGED. The
CLIFF SWALLOWS were busy nest building at the twin barns en masse.

WILLOW and PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS were about as were numerous WESTERN
WOOD-PEEWEES. We also found another RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD NEST with mom
sitting on eggs. This one is just to the left of hummingbird interpretive sign
off the boardwalk low over the water.

For the day we saw 48 species with the PECTORAL SANDPIPER and BAND-TAILED
PIGEON being new for the year.

Mammals seen were COLUMBIAN BLACK-TAILED DEER, EASTERN GRAY SQUIRREL, and
MUSKRAT.

Until next week...
