hello all:

the birds continue to prove they are illiterate. for the second time in
three years they proved they are not reading the articles about young
falcons all of which seem to say once a bird has left the scrape, that's
that, they don't return. two years ago the male left the scrape. after a
couple days (as i recall it) he returned and the girls greeted him with open
arms, er wings. after the initial hellos were said, the girls started
asking him what he had brought to eat. the solicitations became so
boisterous he left the scrape within ten or fifteen minutes never to return
to hang out with those pushy girls again -- to the point where he and dad
flew round and mom and the girls flew around and not much went on between
them for the remainder of the season.

this year, the young man left the scrape yesterday sometime after ten am and
before mid afternoon. he was not around early this morning either. then he
was spotted in the 'vee tree' from whence he flew back to the scrape shortly
after two pm. as of four, when i left, he was back hanging on the rock to
the right of the scrape proper and the other baby was amoebaed out on the
floor of the scrape proper.

don't know who'll fly where or when next.

ps. the elk have finally returned to the big field on the outskirts of
snoqualmie east of the middle school on the highway to north bend. several
bulls in velvet are in the group.
