Subject: [Tweeters] Cassin's Auklet Still in Edmonds

Tweets - I headed up to Edmonds to the Water Street access this morning
to look for the Cassin's Auklet (CAAU) found by Carol Riddell. When I
arrived, Evan Houston was already there and had been scoping for it. A
short while later while scanning, I came upon a small dark/chunky alcid
that was all black, rounded head, black bill - no white showing at all.
By the time Evan got to my scope, he had only a mili-second view before
the bird dove. We tried to relocate it for about 15 minutes without
success. It was last seen feeding between two white buoys (one has a
stick with blue flag, the other is taller with red vertical stripe) as
viewed from the Water Street overlook. Just now, I learned from Carol
that the CAAU she saw yesterday morning was feeding by these buoys and
that the "white eyebrow" has not been visible on the bird(s) being seen
at Edmonds. Also, Carol reported that Dennis Duffy saw the CAAU
yesterday around 1 p.m. from the fishing pier, but that Carol, Steve
Pink and Greg Toffic searched unsuccessfully for it from the fishing
pier this morning...at roughly the same time Evan and I were at Water
Street.

I got a late start this morning so I birded the Edmonds waterfront by
myself. I started at the public pier, then scoped from Sunset Avenue
and finally decided to check out the Water Street public access north of
the Shell Creek outfall, accessed from 9th Avenue. I was at Water
Street at 10:30 a.m., thrilled to see five BRANTs, my first of the
season. Then I scoped a little to the right of the Brants and landed
the lens right on another CASSIN'S AUKLET. I'm beginning to think that
there is one bird that is hanging around the south Snohomish County
waterfront. This morning's birds:

Brant
Surf Scoter
Bufflehead
Red-breasted Merganser
Horned Grebe
Western Grebe
Red-necked Grebe
Dunlin (40+ fly-bys)
Bonaparte's Gull
Mew Gull
Glaucous-winged Gull
Heermann's Gull
Pigeon Guillemot
Common Murre
Rhinoceros Auklet
Cassin's Auklet
Double-crested Cormorant
Pelagic Cormorant
Brandt's Cormorant
Crow
Rock Pigeon
Starling
