Hi Tweeters,
Today I took advantage of a vacation day and the nice weather to get in
about 5 hours of birding in Cowlitz County. Among the highlights was a small
flock of 8 HORNED LARKS in the dredge spoils north of Steelscape at the Port
of Kalama. The Woodland Bottoms had 24 GREAT EGRETS total in a couple of
fields.Also seen were about 200 SANDHILL CRANES. There was a WHITE-BREASTED
NUTHATCH in the Cottonwoods just west of the trestle over the Lewis
River.Last, but cetainly not least, was a flock of 10 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS
exactly one mile west of Dike Acess Road exit from I-5.(Exit 22) This is a
much tougher species in this county than you would expect,and only my second
record in the last 13 years. The birds were in a field on the south side of
the road foraging with a flock of Ring-billed Gulls.
