I didn't get a good look at the second bird, as I didn't have binos. I was able to get two photos of this one bird, but both shots are virtually identical.
Most everyone is suggesting Robin, with an interesting suggestion of Townsend's Solitaire. This bird isn't an obvious Solitaire either. For example, no white on the wing edges. I guess the simplest answer is the most likely - Robin. I want to thank everyone for their thoughtful assistance. On this day of Thanksgiving: thanks for being a great birding community and such a good resource for amateurs.
