One of the main time wasters in our home office over the years
has been one of those hanging mesh basket gizmos that you
put suet blocks in. It is hanging from a plastic suction cup that
is stuck on the outside of a window, down low where although
we can barely see it we have not had window strikes.

Generally we get the usual entertainment, as when the basket
fills up with bushtits, or from visits from butterbutts, jays,
flickers, or downies. This morning we did not hear the tick of a
downie, or the tap of a flicker, but more of a "whup whup"
rapping sound. It was a pileated woodpecker, hanging on and
somehow certain it could get its tool through the spaces
between the wires for the treat.

This was the first time we used suet with red peppers mixed in.
Wonder if pileateds share some of the south of the border
tastebuds of lineated? Maybe I should hang a Tecate can out
of our window to see what shows up.Jerry Broadus
