Jamie and Alice Acker and I (George Gerdts) took a day hike at Paradise on
Mt. Rainier today. We found a family group of White-tailed Ptarmigan on
the upper trail to Panorama Point heading from the basin along the Golden
Gate Trail. There were 3 nearly full-grown chicks with a female. Nearby and
calling occasionally was a male. We had close studies from about 50 feet
away of the group for over half an hour. Also great close looks at a
juvenile Dipper, marmots, Pika, Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel, and a fine array
of wildflowers!
