During my visit in San Diego last week, the state's first GREAT KNOT
showed up on the Strand near Coronado. We spent several hours there on
two different days before we saw it, and then someone decided that it
might be a hybird of a Great Knot and a Surfbird or something. Dozens
of pictures were taken, so a great investigation is underway.

But the trips were worthwhile for me anyway because we saw some RED KNOTS
(also vagrants there), MARBLED GODWITS, WILLETS, ELEGANT TERNS, and
various other gulls and terns. The son I was visiting has created a
bird sanctuary in his back yard where I saw four species of
HUMMINGBIRDS, LESSER GOLDFINCH, HOODED ORIOLES, ROCK PIGEONS, SCRUB
JAYS, and flocks of Mourning Doves and House Finch. Mornings and
evenings, there would be dozens of birds in the yard until a COOPERS
HAWK landed on a nearby light pole whereupon all of them left at once!
