I purchased the iBird Explorer Pro for my iTouch as an alternative to
BirdJam (previously marketed as "iBird") because 1) it was less
expensive 2) it seemed likely to be updated more often (just an
assumption), and 3) it covered the entire US (whereas BirdJam has
separate programs for Eastern and Western US). I have not used
BirdJam, so I can't compare the two. Also, I have not used the
Explorer Pro very much, mainly because I'm already handling a lot of
camera equipment and it's just one more thing to remember and,
potentially, to drop :)

Explorer Pro does seem to be quite expansive, and a decent guide if
you want to look up specific species and review their images,
behaviors, and calls. The search criteria are well-organized and seem
pretty thorough, but I've had some occasions where they did not find
my bird, which was both cumbersome and frustrating. I have suggested
to the manufacturers that they include a feature to display the
search criteria for any given bird, so that the user can do some
"reverse-training" and learn how to use the criteria better. They
replied that they appreciated and would consider my suggestion.

I'd be interested to hear from BirdJam owners about their experiences.
