Hello Group,

In June I made the long flight to France and Greece with my family. I spent many hours reviewing iBird pro content. I couldn't sleep on the jet so spent the night awake on the Polar route listening to and viewing the app. The review was interrupted at 4:00 AM by a conversation with the only other person awake on the plane, John Malkovich. If someone would have predicted that I would have a long conversation with John Malkovich over the North Pole in the middle of the night, among sleeping people, with wine, discussing technology, children and the environment, and favorite movies, I would have been skeptical. He is a nice guy and was returning to France. Then I went back to reviewing the app.

I would recommend it. I would like more photos and calls, but I am sure this will happen with time. Please see the the link below. It lists and reviews the newest updates to the program (summer 2009), which are many. The notes addition looks very useful, and may be used to contact others (with I-phone). This is a major upgrade.

iBird Explorer Pro gets upgrade: new features ? Cloudy Days and ...

Also, great birding was available among the ruins in Greece. Apparently, the Gods and Greeks picked the best bird environments and most beautiful locations for their temples.

I purchased the iBird Explorer Pro for my iTouch as an alternative to BirdJam (previously marketed as "iBird") because 1) it was less expensive 2) it seemed likely to be updated more often (just an assumption), and 3) it covered the entire US (whereas BirdJam has separate programs for Eastern and Western US). I have not used BirdJam, so I can't compare the two. Also, I have not used the Explorer Pro very much, mainly because I'm already handling a lot of camera equipment and it's just one more thing to remember and, potentially, to drop :)

Explorer Pro does seem to be quite expansive, and a decent guide if you want to look up specific species and review their images, behaviors, and calls. The search criteria are well-organized and seem pretty thorough, but I've had some occasions where they did not find my bird, which was both cumbersome and frustrating. I have suggested to the manufacturers that they include a feature to display the search criteria for any given bird, so that the user can do some "reverse-training" and learn how to use the criteria better. They replied that they appreciated and would consider my suggestion.

I'd be interested to hear from BirdJam owners about their experiences.

i Bird Explorer Pro for either a iPhone touch, or iPod touch for 29.99 at iTunes. It covers 940 birds, there is also another iBirds Explorer Plus for other models of the iPods for 19.99. I bought a 8GB Touch iPod and the program is wonderful. But no life list. There are a total of 8 different areas of bird programs. I would like to hear from anyone who has comments on this program and maybe a Twitter discussion. The iPod Touch hooks up to the internet also by wi-fi.
