Tweeters,

We have been having population surveys (how many swifts go in the
chimney) most every evening in migration at Monroe and Selleck for the
last two years. I just got a great report on Cathy Clark's effort at
Monroe Wagner last night, that I felt was worth a share.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Site: Frank Wagner Elementary School
Observer: Cathy Clark
Time: 6:00 pm - 8:15 pm
Sunset: 7:36 pm
Temperature range: 68 - 66 degrees F
Precipitation: none, hazy
1st Swift seen: 6:35 pm
1st Swift in: 7:31 pm
Last Swift in: 7:55 pm
Total Count: 9,800

Comments: "Back to School Night" in full swing - kids and parents
everywhere. Immediately after principal Robin's PA announcement to
dismiss all, 2 dozen swifts appeared as a visual punctuation. The
usual, steady increase of numbers and flight intensity until 7:31.
"They're going in!" About 30 spectators tonight. I have never had to
count so fast, and my numbers may be a bit low because of it. It only
slowed down for the last several hundred, and those were getting hard
to see at 7:55. None flew off to other lodging.

Saturday is, as Neil Z. just posted, Monroe's Vaux's Swift community
celebration.
