I scouted around the Vancouver Lake area today checking a couple of spots for the upcoming WOS Convention. At Ruefner's Pond, the first pond on you right here were 20 GREAT EGRETS, 4 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 8 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER ( heard), and a lot of eclipse plumaged MALLARDS, NORTHERN SHOVELERS and NORTHERN PINTAIL.
At the Flushing Channel I walked out on the right side of the outlet and then turned right to check the shorebirds on the mudflats in the bay. There was a large flock of WESTERN SANDPIPERS at the far end of this bay that contained only one other species a single BAIRD'S SANDPIPER. A PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER and several WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were in the willows and cottonwoods between the lake and the road.
