RARE BIRD ALERT for a WESTERN SCRUB-JAY, probably present since May, on the
Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge; a BLACK PHOEBE at Terra Nova Park in
Richmond from September 7 to 12; a HERMIT WARBLER on River Road in Richmond
on September 8; and LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS at two localities on September 11
and 12.


Sightings for Saturday, September 12th

The BLACK PHOEBE is still being seen at Terra Nova Park in Richmond, mostly
near the abandoned house at 2500 River Road, but it disappears from that
locality for hours at a time.

Another LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was seen near the refinery at Ioco, NW of
Port Moody.

A GREEN HERON was at the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver.

Eight SANDHILL CRANES were at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, and a
PILEATED WOODPECKER was very unusual for that locality.


Sightings for Friday, September 11th

The BLACK PHOEBE was still present at Terra Nova Park in Richmond.

A LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was seen at the west end of Deer Lake in Burnaby.

Six COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen over Mundy Park in Coquitlam.

A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was reported from Cecil Green Park on the
University of BC camps in Vancouver.


Sightings for Thursday, September 10th

The BLACK PHOEBE was still present at Terra Nova Park in Richmond, and
two COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen nearby.

Two MARBLED GODWITS were seen at the Beach Grove lagoon in Delta, at
the east foot of 12th Avenue on Boundary Bay.

A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen off the Maplewood Conservation Area in
North Vancouver.


Sightings for Wednesday, September 9th

The BLACK PHOEBE was seen and photographed by several observers at
Terra Nova Park in Richmond. Two SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were also seen
nearby along a ditch in the park.

A GREEN HERON and an early AMERICAN PIPIT were seen at Jericho Park
in Vancouver.

A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from a ferry off the Roberts Bank coal port
in Delta.


Sightings for Tuesday, September 8th

A BLACK PHOEBE, only about the fifth record for B.C., was found around an
abandoned house at 2500 River Road in Richmond, within Terra Nova Park.
It had been seen there the previous day but not reported. Nearby, near the
intersection of River Road and Lynus Lane, a male HERMIT WARBLER was
reported, but could not be found by other birders later the same day.

On Iona Island in Richmond, a VESPER SPARROW was seen near the base
of the North Jetty, possibly the same one seen earlier near the sewage
ponds.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen with Canada Geese on the
Trinity Western University campus in Langley.


Sightings for Monday, September 7th

A juvenile HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen near the foot of 96th Street on
Boundary Bay in Delta. Also here were 3 RED KNOTS, 40 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, and 30 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS. Twelve EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES
were seen along 96th Street just south of Highway 99.

The WESTERN SCRUB-JAY was seen again in the 21900 block of Lougheed
Highway in Maple Ridge.

The SOLITARY SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER, and GREEN HERON were seen
again at Elgin Heritage Park on Crescent Road in Surrey, along with an
unseasonable RED-THROATED LOON in the Nicomekl River there.


Sightings for Sunday, September 6th

An early SNOW GOOSE and a bird believed to be a ROSS'S GOOSE were seen
at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta.

A high count of 11 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES was reported from near the
intersection of River Road and 34th Street in Delta. Nearby at the Reifel
Bird
Sanctuary were a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD and a high count of 20 BANK
SWALLOWS.

The SOLITARY SANDPIPER and STILT SANDPIPER were seen again at Elgin
Heritage Park in Surrey.


Sightings for Saturday, September 5th

The VESPER SPARROW was seen again at the Iona Island sewage ponds in
Richmond, and the WANDERING TATTLER was near the end of the Iona
south jetty again.

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER, a STILT SANDPIPER, and a GREEN HERON were at
the pond at Elgin Heritage Park in Surrey.

One LEWIS'S WOODPECKER remained at the Maplewood Conservation Area
in North Vancouver.

A female LONG-TAILED DUCK, very unusual this early in the fall, was
photographed at Jericho Park in Vancouver.


Sightings for Friday, September 4th

A WILLET was seen on the beach near the White Rock pier in White Rock.

The WESTERN SCRUB-JAY was seen again in the 21900 block of Lougheed
Highway in Maple Ridge.

The two LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS were still at the Maplewood Conservation
Area in North Vancouver.

A WANDERING TATTLER and a HEERMANN'S GULL were seen near the end of the
Iona Island south jetty in Richmond.


Sightings for Thursday, September 3rd

Two LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS and 11 VAUX'S SWIFTS were at the Maplewood
Conservation Area in North Vancouver.

The BLACK TERN was seen near the White Rock pier for the fourth day
in a row.

Birds noted at the Iona Island sewage ponds in Richmond included the
VESPER SPARROW, a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, and 5 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS.


Sightings for Wednesday, September 2nd

The BLACK TERN at White Rock and the two LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS at
Maplewood were both seen again.

In Richmond, the VESPER SPARROW was still at the Iona Island sewage
ponds, and 5 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and 2 RHINOCEROS AUKLETS were
near the tip of the south jetty.

Other birds of note included a SOLITARY SANDPIPER at the Elgin Heritage Park
pond in Surrey, 3 MUTE SWANS near the Westham Island bridge in Delta,
and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 2 BANK SWALLOWS, and 3
RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta.


Sightings for Tuesday, September 1st

The two LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS were at the Maplewood Conservation Area again.

The BLACK TERN and a PARASITIC JAEGER were seen near the White Rock pier
In White Rock.

A WANDERING TATTLER was photographed at the tip of the Iona Island south
Jetty in Richmond.

This was the last reported date for the HUDSONIAN GODWIT at the Reifel
Bird Sanctuary in Delta.


Sightings for Monday, August 31st

At White Rock, a BLACK TERN was seen with Common Terns just east of the
White Rock pier.

Two LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS, a very rare migrant, were seen at the
Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver.

Birds seen at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta included the lingering
HUDSONIAN GODWIT, 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, and 9 SANDHILL CRANES.


Sightings for Sunday, August 30th

The HUDSONIAN GODWIT was present again at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary
In Delta. Elsewhere, a rare summering RED-THROATED LOON was seen
off White Rock, and a COMMON NIGHTHAWK was at the railway yards in
Port Coquitlam.


Sightings for Saturday, August 29th

On Vancouver Island, a BROWN BOOBY, only the second record for B.C.,
was reported offshore from Tower Point west of Victoria.

A dark-phase NORTHERN FULMAR was reported from a ferry a short distance
off the Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta.

Birds reported from the foot of 96th Street in Delta included 6 RED KNOTS, a
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, a MARBLED GODWIT, and 50 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS.


Sightings for Friday, August 28th

The HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen again and photographed in the West Field
at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta.

A VESPER SPARROW was found at the Iona Island sewage ponds in Richmond.

Near the foot of 96th Street on Boundary Bay in Delta, a BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER, a MARBLED GODWIT, and 3 RED KNOTS were seen with many
other shorebirds.

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was at Elgin Heritage Park in Surrey, and a MARBLED
GODWIT and 2 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS were at nearby Blackie Spit.

The WESTERN SCRUB-JAY was seen again in the 21900 block of Lougheed
Highway in Maple Ridge.
