hello everyone,
Birds in the News is delayed because i've spent the previous two days (and one night) tending to a very sick parrot. please accept my apologies, those three of you who were looking forward to reading it!
today's mystery bird is a relatively common North American species that is challenging people's ID abilities;

the most recently demystified mystery bird was an African Green-pigeon, Treron calvus, thanks to photographer, Dan Logen;

i was outraged to see a news report that cypriots are still killing songbirds, non-passerines (including birds of prey), some critically endangered, just to sell their tiny bodies to restaurants who prepare them as a delicacy -- mostly to sell to tourists!

needless to say, after i've relocated to germany, i plan to volunteer to save these birds from such wanton destruction (and yes, i plan to write about this on my blog, and include photographs and video).
anyway, outrage aside, here is a really astonishing video clip of a blue whale feeding in antarctica that you might enjoy watching;

and last but not least, this video is a fascinating clip from a longer streaming program about how scientists think featuring Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophycisist and science communicator at the American Museum of Natural History;
