Subject: [Tweeters]: Gull vs. Sea Star

Hi all,

I?ve seen a number of gulls trying to swallow sea stars throughout the
years, and it has always seemed to be a very slow and difficult process. On
Sunday I ran into a Glaucous-winged Gull at Brackett?s Landing in Edmonds
that seemed to be a bit more efficient at the task. I spotted him on the
beach from a distance with the large star dangling from his beak. He
entered the water as a family walked by him. After swimming a short
distance he proceeded to gulp the star down in short order. With several
exaggerated jerks of his head the star disappeared and he was left looking
like a new species called the Thick-necked or Wide-throated Gull. Photos of
the event can be found on my website here:

They are in both the ?New Photos? and ?Glaucous-winged Gull? galleries.

Happy Birding,
