I've had a couple of people say they believe these are Hoodies. One of the things I didn't put in the original post (i didn't think about it at the time) was these birds seemed pretty close to the size of neighbouring mallards on the same log. now that i'm looking more critically at the photo, the one big thing that recommends HOME for me, though, is the length of body. these guys don't look as elongated as Common Mergansers.

is it possible for HOMEs to get that large? COMEs can, but HOMEs?

i've also asked, though i'm pretty sure i know the answer already, but is it possible for HOMEs and COMEs to co-mingle?
