The bird was seen sitting on our hummingbird feeder on Thursday evening at around 6pm while I was outside working in yard.? I was standing about 8-10 feet away and had very clear views of the bird as it sat and drank at the feeder for about a minute before flying off not to be seen again.? It sat very upright at the feeder and looked quite slender through the body and neck, svelte if you will, not plump like Anna's often look when sitting at the feeder,? The head was solid, dark, and noticeably, the dark throat feathers (couldn't tell color black vs red vs purple) ended in a clean line against solid white feathers at the throat level, there was no gorget like an adult male Anna's.? The white of the throat extended cleanly back towards the neck, almost like a band, but the overall effect was a very distinct break between the dark head, the white chest and green back and wings.? THe bill looked long and slightly down-curved and the wings tips appeared round tipped and extended out beyond the back, above the tail.?? The bird immediately stood out as different than the usual Anna's we have regularly, so I tried to remember as many characteristics of the bird as I could. Bird hasn't been seen again unfortunately.
