Ted Peterson and I were birding from the Edmonds public pier this
morning at 9 a.m. I was using my scope and Ted was using his
binoculars. We had identified most of what there was to see when I
noticed a large gull-like bird flying straight and low, from south to
north, not that far off the pier. I put the scope on it and told Ted
it was a light-morph jaeger. He got right on it and we both watched
it until it was north of the ferry dock. It had a steady wing-beat
with the GISS of a gull. It was an adult bird, somewhat bulky.
There was no central tail extension, which seemed to rule out a
Parasitic Jaeger. Ted thought the breast band was too broad for a
Parasitic. We went up to Sunset Avenue and each put up a scope. We
watched for a while but could not relocate the bird. Jaeger watchers
should keep an eye out for this bird and perhaps we will get a
positive identification of a Pomarine in Snohomish County waters.
