Hi All,

I spent a short time at Juanita Bay Park in Kirkland Monday evening and had
a great time watching an immature Green Heron. When I first spotted him he
had a dragonfly in his mouth, but during a less than graceful attempt at
bashing the insect against a log the heron lost his grip and his meal flew
away. He then spent some time alternately defending the log against a group
of Gadwalls that wanted to use it and searching for small edible bits in the
water next to the log. He eventually flew across the bay and, after
preening a bit, stretched his neck out to try to blend with the cattails
behind him. I also noticed a group of three Red-eared Sliders sunning
themselves on logs in the middle of the bay. One of them was sitting on a
very high and precarious perch, and I can only assume he is a better climber
than most turtles, or he can fly...probably the former :o).

Photos of the heron, a Gadwall or two and the flying turtle can be found on
