Hi Yakkers,

My wife Chris and I were joined Saturday by Kerry Turley, Richard Repp and
George Vlahakis on a hike to Bear Creek Mountainsouthwest of Rimrock
Lake following up on a
recent report of a sighting of White-tailed Ptarmigan on the north
flank of Bear Creek Mountain.

Needless to say, we didn't find any ptarmigan. ( Members of Yakima Audubon
have been searching for nearly ten years to find White-tailed
Ptarmigan in Yakima
County. This report from Alan Richards is the second time in two
years that ptarmigan
have been seen in Yakima County. Last year three were seen uphill
from Bird Creek
Meadows on the southeast flank of Mt. Adams.) We did a good search
of the area and I think we found the meadow where the ptarmigan were
seen. There is a lot of terrain on the north flank of the mountain
and it is possible there are still ptarmigan there. It may take a
larger group of people to find one.

The day was gorgeous and the hike was incredible. We found some
wonderful color in the ground cover along the trail. I can't imagine
a more beautiful day for a hike in the woods.

Though we didn't find ptarmigan, we did see lots of birds. The
highlights were:

- One Osprey that was migrating south; we saw it on our hike out.
- One Merlin that cruised past me high up on the mountain side.
- Two or Three Pine Grosbeaks seen on the hike in.
- Many Cassins Finches; Kerry counted 35; I thought there were
closer to 100. Females and immatures out-numbered males by 10-1.
- Two Red Crossbills on the ground in the parking area as we arrived.
- Four White-winged Crossbills along the trail on our way out
and four more in the parking area as we arrived back at our cars
(possibly the same birds).
