What a treat tonight. I live in an urban area but still has some good dense
big tree stands north of Martha Lake (Lynnwood/Everett). I was typing at the
computer about 10 pm when I heard some odd sounds from outside. I opened my
window and was treated to a symphony of great horned owls in a territorial
dispute -- 3 of them.
One was just outside my window in one of the big trees in my front
yard, the other two were in neighbor yards. I could hear two of them
rustling about, a third more distance, then really loud calls, the typical
sound then some not so friendly calling with what sounded like growling. Two
were now very close. I could hear two in a tussel, then more disgruntled
calls in my yard, then some beak snapping. Branches rustling again. Now one
owl close calling, the other two in retreat. Then silence followed by the
single owl in my yard calling normally. Then it flew past my window into the
night.
What a joy to know that breeding woodpeckers (3 species this summer) and
now so many owls still abide in these divided urbanized woods that I share
with them.
