On our way home from Missoula, my wife and I ventured up into Pend Oreille
County high country for a night, and then headed back home via Steves
county.

Overall, the birding was pretty slow - not terribly unexpected at this time
of year. Especially Tuesday, with the cold blowy overcast, was quiet.

We did have some good birds though.

At several locations on the way up to Salmo Pass and at the top, as well as
one bird near Pass Creek Pass, we had WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS. We never had
more than 2 at any spot, but had them at 5 or 6 different locations. We had
NO Red Crossbills.

We had two DUSKY GROUSE, one at Salmo Pass and one near the fire lookout.
RUFFED GROUSE were everywhere.

We tried and failed to find Boreal Owl at Pass Creek Pass on Monday night,
but did have a NORTHERN PYGMY OWL near where we camped, 2 miles west of the
pass.

On our way home, in Stevens County, we had a MERLIN chasing AMERICAN PIPITS
on Marble Valley Basin Rd. north of Addy.

And between Springdale and Ford, just north of mp57 on SR-231, we stopped
for a flock of WESTERN BLUEBIRDS (at least 8) and had a female WHITE-HEADED
WOODPECKER.
