hi tweeters- today? is the highest number of shorebird species i have
seen at tulalip bay in one day !--along the mission beach side were 8
killdeer, 2 black-bellied plovers + 1 spotted sandpiper-- around 3p.m on
the spit was a large flock of black bellied plovers?150? with
others--they were very flighty-but included 1 marbled godwit , 2 red
knots, 1 short-billed dowitcher, 2 dunlins, 5 sanderlings + 4-5 dozen
western sandpipers---it was fun to hear the high -pitched "godwit'' sound
over the plaintif call of many plovers!--- i also noted 2 female common
mergansers, 4 surf scoters + small numbers of western grebes making their
fall appearances.--the best way to view these shorebirds is at tides
higher than 8 feet when they are concentrated on the spit--right now is
fishing time for the tulalip tribe so often the birds take into
flight--they are usually on the northwest side of the spit or the end
making it difficult to view them from the road----currently there are7
killdeers basking on our docks in the sun?--cheers,maxine reid?? ,
