Subject: [Tweeters] Edmonds: First of Year Turkey Vulture

Hi Tweets,

Despite the chilly temperature and strong marine winds this morning
(4-3-10) a single Turkey Vulture was hovering over Woodway and seen
from the Point Edwards public path. The dominant sea bird this
morning was Brant, which numbered over 175. Horned Grebes in
breeding plumage were a delight to the eye, as was a Pelagic
Cormorant with its double crest, red face and white flank patch .
While the Surf Scoters were absent, or perhaps north of the ferry
dock, there was a small flock of Dunlin, several Bonaparte's Gulls
and one western Grebe. The wind was still strong enough at the marsh
that small birds were hunkered down out of sight. There was one
Great Blue Heron in the marsh but still no sign of any interest in
the heron nests. One in our group mentioned that he had heard a
number of California Quail in the blackberry brambles at the Hatchery
last Tuesday and seen one. Quail sightings have become scarce in the
Edmonds Bowl so it is unfortunate that this bramble that provides
them with shelter is scheduled to be removed.
