Hi Eric:
Yes, Purple Finches sing the question and answer song of the Cassin's Vireo. They sing it long before the vireos return. I heard a gray Purple Finch sing the question-ans. song in mid-January here in Des Moines.

Subject: [Tweeters] Goshawk; Finch vocalization question

Yesterday morning around 9:00 at the intersection of South Bay Rd. NE and 12 Av. NE in Olympia, a Northern Goshawk flew over heading West. This morning around 8:30 a Green Heron flew over student housing at TESC.

I've been hearing some strange vocalizations which I'm convinced are Purple Finches. It is a vireo-like series of phrases, some phrases are very similar to Cassin's Vireo. I don't believe it's Cassin's Vireo because a Purple Finch song often comes right after the phrases stop. Has anyone else noticed vocalizations like this? I have a recording I can send to anyone who is interested in taking a listen.
