This message about a trip to Ridgefield NWR near Woodland WA was posted
on COBOL, the Oregon State Bird discussion list this week with some nice
photos that I though might interest some of you. The member who posted,
Kevin Smith of Crooked River Ranch, gave me permission to repost it here.

Kevin's Message:

Kei and I have just returned from the Portland area where we spent some
very soggy days. Monday we drove up to Woodland, Washington and drove
though the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, a place we often go on
rainy days because of their great drive through tour. The following
birds were seen there:

Pied-billed Grebes
Great Blue Herons
Canada Geese
Cackling Geese
Gadwals
Mallards
Northern Shovelers
Ring-necked Ducks
Green-winged Teals
Wood Ducks
Bald Eagles-3 adults, 4 yearlings
Red-tailed Hawk
Northern Harrier
Turkey Vulture
Coots
Snipe-winnowing
Northern Flicker
Scrub-jays
Tree Swallows
Violet-green Swallows
Robins
Starlings
Dark-eyed Junco
Song Sparrow
Red-wing Blackbirds

The young Baldies spent a lot of time trying to capture the Coots
(without any luck), but managed to cause quite a ruckess in the
process. Lots of great photos!

Along with 25 species of birds we saw
1-Raccoon
3-Nutria
1-Coyote-a young one who didn't seem to see any of the cars in the area
and provided a wonderful chance to photograph it catching Western Pocket
Gophers up close and personal.
