ARCH to host 1st World House Sparrow Day
Friday, 19.03.2010, 11:04am (GMT+5.5)

By our staff reporter
Dehradun, 18 Mar: The First World House Sparrow Day ? 2010 is being organised at the MKP (PG) College on 20 March by Action & Research for Conservation in Himalayas (ARCH), Dehradun, to awareness on conservation efforts for the ?House Sparrow?. It will reflect concern at the increasing absence of this bird from houses these days.
ARCH has established its identity with its ?Great Himalayan Bird Count?, which is carried out every November with the help of experts and bird watchers. Amongst other things, the Bird Count has also boosted ?Tourism for Conservation? in the state.
To provide training to the common people on conserving the bird, ARCH will launch on 20 March the House Sparrow Nest Box Adoption Programme. People will be encouraged to install these predator proof nest boxes. This will have three advantages - provide the species a safe place to nest, lead to increase in its numbers and acquaint the new generations with this very special and frolicsome bird.
Over the past two years, field trials have been held of the House Sparrow Nest Box, which have proved successful.
Sparrow Day will be celebrated as a day of resolve and responsibility to save the bird. The attempt will be made to involve as many people as possible ? be it the housewife, school or college student, teacher or businessman.
ARCH will also involve schools in the rural areas of the state, so that village children also learn about birds and wild animals. It may be a beginning with just a small bird, but will lead on to greater awareness. The organisation believes that nothing can be achieved without involvement of the common people, be it saving the sparrow or combating global warming.
Sparrow Day will also be celebrated by Cornell Labs of Ornithology (USA), Nature Forever Society, Ecosis Action Foundation (France), Avian Wildlife Trust, Dudhwa Live and the Bombay Natural History Society. The objective is to establish an effective network to save this bird, which is rapidly disappearing at present because of loss of habitat. The changing lifestyle of the people has deprived the bird of its habitat, food and nesting places. The mindless use of pesticide has also threatened its existence, along with that of a lot of creatures that live in proximity to man. Microwave radiation from household equipment and mobile phones, as well as pollution, have also affected its existence. ARCH wishes to turn this goal into a campaign.
The bird is known by many names: The House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) is a species of passerine bird in the sparrow family Passeridae. In India, it is popularly known as goraiya in the Hindi speaking districts. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala it is known as kuruvi. In Telugu it is known as the pichhuka, and in Kannada, gubbachchi. The Gujaratis call it chakli whereas the Maharashtrians call it chimani. It is known as chiri in Punjab, chaer in Jammu and Kashmir, Charai Pakhi in West Bengal, and gharachatia in Orissa. In Urdu it is called chirya while in Sindhi, it is known as jhirki.
According to the Founder Trustee of ARCH, Prateek Panwar, the House Sparrow Nest Monitoring program launch would not have been possible without the support of Indu Singh, Principal, MKP (PG) College, who have pledged support to all ARCH conservation initiatives and has requested all MKP students to participate in this important voluntary conservation cause. The launch would be attended by Dr R S Tolia, Chief Information Commissioner, as the Chief Guest and Dr Rajendra Dobhal, Director, UCOST, as Guest of Honor. Others present would be Jairaj, CCF Environment, Uttarakhand Forest Department, SP Subbadhi, RM, Tehri, Forest Corporation, famous bird photographer SF Ahmed, Dr P C Banerji, Dr Nitin Pandey, Dr Bharat Patil, Ruchi Singh Rao, Jagmohan Panwar, Satish Dhaulakhandi along with Dr Rekha Khare, Dr Archna Varshney, Dr Sunita Kumar, Dr Tajender Kaur, Alka Kohli, Dr Satyawati Sachan, Dr Neelam Ghildyal, Meenakshi Sharma, Dr Neetu Tripathi and Science Club Member students of M!
KP (PG) College, Dehradun.

Frodo: I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. .... And that is an encouraging thought.
