Tweeters,

I camped at Brooks Memorial Friday night and started birding yesterday morning at 6:30am. I travelled to Goldendale and on the way the noteworthy birds seen were Evening Grosbeaks and Turkey Vultures. After getting coffee at Goldendale and spotting a lone Violet-Green Swallow on a near utility pole line, I turned down the Goldendale Bickleton Highway. Birding the Goldendale Bickleton Highway area produced numerous sighting including two Logger-Headed Shrikes ("lifer"), Western Bluebirds, four Cinnamon Teals, 50 American Pipits, and six Horned Larks.

I then traveled to Balch Lake, birding and stopping frequently on the way of course, and found my "lifer" ACORN WOODPECKER clinging a tree on the cow pasture behind the nearby residents of Balch Lake. I had to "sift" through all the Lewis's Woodpeckers until I finally spotted our beautiful acorn-gathering friend. After lunch in Lyle, I birded the little town and found my "lifer" Lesser Goldfinch on the local residents' feeders and trees.

Near the end of my trip, I spotted a male and female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER at the Bingen Marina, along with
Horned Grebes, Common Goldeneye, Tree Swallows, I heard a Virginia
Rail, and many Green-Winged Teal were also visible from the road that leads
to the Marina.

My trip produced a total of 56 Klickitat County species.

This is one of the few times I have posted on here thus, I'll introduce myself and briefly explain how I started birding. I started birding my second year of college at Lower Columbia College in Longview, WA. I was taking a Biology class spring of '07 and the teacher had the students complete a birding assignment which included recording sightings of 25 different species. Any new bird species sightings over 25 was extra credit. When the assignment was due, I had seen 45 birds in the area.

I chose to continue that assignment for a hobby. Since that time I came to Walla Walla University to complete a Bachelor degree in Social Work. I am currently in the Master of Social Work program at Walla Walla University and I intern at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center here in Walla Walla.
