Yesterday evening (Monday 4/19) at 7:50 pm, I once again had a MERLIN flying
over Twin Lakes. It was carrying prey and flew a semi-circle around my
neighborhood. We may indeed have a breeding pair, unless this is a late
winter visitor!
This evening I watched two RIVER OTTERS at play on the shore of Lake Jeane
and within 20 feet of a CANADA GOOSE sitting on its nest and keeping a low
profile. Now where was the gander which normally stands guard? Waterfowl
numbers are way down ,with the exception of a healthy MALLARD population. I
do see more bachelor groups every day and did have a brood of five day-old
ducklings last week. BUFFLEHEAD and RING-NECKED DUCKS are still in fair
numbers and we also have a few NORTHERN SHOVELERS left. Today was the first
day that I was unable to locate a single AMERICAN WIGEON on either lake.
