I found the ABA Birder's Guide to Alaska by George C. White to be really
helpful when I went to (among other places) Nome. otherwise I'd have never
found the Bristle-thighed Curlew, etc. and rent a pick-up rather than a
small car. you don't need it around Nome, but towards the ends of some of
the roads things get less certain in rough weather.
