Hey tweets, The Fill produced its first Blue-winged Teal this morning
- a beautiful drake floating in the slough that divides Canoe Island
from the Loop Trail. I warn you: he is elusive. I found him noodling
around in the reeds in full sun, but shortly after I spotted him, he
began nudging into the reeds. First his head disappeared, then his
little chest, then his middle, finally his tail. Gone, like he had
never been. A Cheshire Cat from the back end, I suppose you could say.

Also on view: a Hermit Thrush yesterday; several Lincoln's Sparrows,
at least four Orange-crowned Warblers, a Greater Scaup on Main Pond,
and a few lingering pairs of American Wigeons. Also, four Least
Sandpipers.

Back at the car, I got swept up by a swirl of swallows and swifts.
They were pursuing bugs at knee height and nearly ran me down. Utterly
charming.
