Today Barry Woodruff and I joined Eric Bjorkman as he led a morning hike for a Boy Scout group on Trout Lake marsh trail in Klickitat County. As we walked from the Trout Lake Ranger Station to the trail head we spotted a BLACK SWIFT among the VAUX'S SWIFTS overhead. A real surprise was finding a COMMON POORWILL sitting in the grass along the Lake Road. When we reached the trail head we began encountering numerous birds in mixed flocks including: RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BROWN CREEPER, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, CHESTNUT-SIDED CHICKADEE, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER AND MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER. Other birds encountered along the trail to the Elk Meadows RV Park were PILEATED WOODPECKER, RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, WILLOW FLYCATCHER and a pair of ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHERS sitting in a willow in the middle of the marsh. Hopefully some of these young men will get the birding bug and continue on with this great activity.
After we parted ways with the Scouts we headed north into Skamania County and checked out Horseshoe, Olallie and Takhlakh Lakes where it was very quiet and the only bird of interest was a MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE. On our way back toward Trout Lake, Eric spotted a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL on top of a thirty-foot fir tree along the roadside that allowed us to photograph it to our content.
