Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This report
was made Thursday August 12. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at
503-233-3976.

Migrations are now in full swing, but shorebirds continue to be the most
conspicuous. On August 9 a possible LITTLE STINT was at the mouth of the
Necanicum River in Gearhart.

On August 7 an immature COSTA?S HUMMINGBIRD visited feeders in South Beach,
south of Newport. A FRANKLIN?S GULL was at the Cannon Beach Sewage Ponds
August 5. Thousands of SOOTY SHEARWATERS are now passing just offshore.

On August 4, 80 WHITE PELICANS, 30 GREAT EGRETS, and two SANDHILL CRANES
were at The Wash on Sauvie Island. Another 18 WHITE PELICANS were at Ankeny
NWR August 9.

On August 7 a MERLIN was seen near Odell in the Hood River Valley. A
SANDERLING was at Houston Lake near Powell Butte August 6. Among the many
shorebirds at Ladd Marsh near LaGrande August 8 were 2-3 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS, 15-20 BAIRD?S SANDPIPERS, and two MARBLED GODWITS.

Large flocks of shorebirds are now gathering on Summer Lake and Lake Abert.
Peak numbers should occur there by late August and early September.

That?s it for this week.
