Hello Tweeters,

After further travels and then extended house guests, I've finally worked up a trip list from my weeks in Colombia. I spent most of my time on the Javeriana University campus on the south edge of Cali, and went on several cultural excursions on which I tried to record as many birds as possible under the circumstances: to Popay?n, El Para?so, Restrepo. Finally, on our last day, we were able to spend an entire day birding. This trip was arranged with international support! Jim Danzenbaker not only had been providing terrific ID help with some photos, but also contacted a colleague of his in Ecuador (with the Neblina Forest foundation), who contacted a colleague of his with the Calidris Foundation in Cali, who contacted us for the birding trip.

The trip was expertly led by biologist Richard Johnston (cc'd on this email in case you'd like to contact him about future trips or the Calidris Foundation) and included two sites: Chicoral (northwest of Cali, on the slope of the Western Cordillera) and Agua Salada (an oxbow of the Rio Cauca). We had originally planned to continue on to Sonso Lake, but we were having such a terrific experience at Agua Salada that we decided to spend longer there. Highlights of our time at Agua Salada were the elusive but stunning Ruby-Topaz Hummingbird, a Cinnamon Teal with young (rare documentation of breeding), and a rare Capybara; photos on my Flickr site. (Of course, pretty much every bird was a highlight for me since they were almost all new!)

In addition to thanking Jim Danzenbaker, I also want to express my appreciation to Chuck Pell, who provided extremely helpful ID assistance from Seattle during my trip.

The list below includes species from all sites. A ? (check) mark by the entry means that I have a reasonable photo that's available on my Flickr site; a - beside the entry means I have a poorer photo that's adequate for ID but not much else. The photos are in my "Birds of Colombia" set on Flickr, in the same order as the list (I hope):

There are a few remaining photos that I haven't yet been able to ID, in my "Colombia - Mystery birds" set (www.flickr.com/photos/trileigh/sets/72157624253542209/). As an enthusiastic amateur, I would welcome both new ID's and corrections to photos I've mis-identified.

I also want to say that I'm really grateful to the Tweeters community! I kept thinking of how much I was going to enjoy sharing these pictures with you all.

Cheers,
Trileigh
