I headed out this morning to search for shorebirds in Skamania County after reading all the posts about the birds being seen elsewhere. Shorebirds are one of the hardest to find species in this county. I first stopped at the St. Cloud Recreation Area near Prindle and found 3 RED- EYED VIREOS in the trees around the old orchard but nothing on the shore. The Franz Lake NWR overlook produced nothing and the water was still too high at Skamania Landing. The boat launch at Beacon Rock State Park hosted 3 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS. I struck out at Bass Lake and Greenleaf Slough in North Bonneville but a visit to the small pond visible from the east parking lot at the Bonneville Hot Springs Resort produced 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, a species with only a couple of prior county records. The mouth of Rock Creek at Stevenson now has an extensive mudflat created by a landslide a couple of years ago. The first two years that this mud was here it apparently was too fresh and did not contain anything for the shorebirds to feed on and we only saw one Long-billed Dowitcher (2nd county record) here last year. Today there was 1 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (1st county record), 6 LEAST SANDPIPERS, and a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER (1st county record). The mouth of the Wind River had 2 PIED-BILLED GREBES, 8 NORTHERN PINTAIL (first of the year for the cumulative county list), and 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and 3 PURPLE MARTINS. A quick check of Ashes Lake gave me 11 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, (the first of the year for the cumulative county list).
