Thank you John Puschock for finding the BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at Magnuson Park!
It was a lifer for me many years ago in Alaska however, I usually do not go
east of the mountains in the winter, so I had not seen any in quite some
time.
Carole and I had a couple of errands to run in Seattle today, so we detoured
to the park to hopefully see the Waxwings first. It was still quite foggy
when we left Federal Way, but as expected, had almost cleared when we got to
Magnuson Park. We parked at the Kite Hill Lot, but found only AMERICAN
ROBINS and EUROPEAN STARLINGS there. We decided to walk west on the Cross
Park Trail and at 10:45 am found a flock of 20 or more Waxwings in trees
just south of the trail and then flying. The numerous Robins and Starlings
made it more difficult to pick out the Waxwings. I alerted a couple of
photographers on the main road. Something spooked all birds, but we did not
see a Hawk. When things settled down, I spotted 5 Waxwings in a crab apple
tree between the trail and the parking lot. One turned out to be a CEDAR
WAXWING, allowing an excellent comparison between the two species.
