I have had several people ask for directions to the locations for theTUNDRA and TRUMPETER SWANS, SHORT-EARED OWL, GREATER WHITE FRONTED GEESE, and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. The swans and owl are quite regular. The hawk is much more uncertain. I have sited two in two different areas in the last two weeks. That being said here are the directions.

Coming on I-5 take Exit 78
Go west for about 5 miles to the 76 gas station.
Turn left and go about 1-1.5 miles to the base of the hill.
Turn Right onto Twin Oaks Rd.
Go about 2-3 miles and start looking in the open fields on the left.
When you get to Pleasant Valley Rd. (the first road to the left) turn onto it.
This will give you views out into the fields were the swans usually are.
If you go up the road about a mile there is a pull off on the left side of the road where you can park you car. This is where I saw the ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK.

Start looking for the owls once you turn onto Pleasant Valley Rd. They can bee seen across the valley for the next 1-1.5 miles. Make sure to scan the fields towards the bluff with the green barn. The distances are long so if you have a scope it will be helpful.

PLEASE REMEMBER THE LAND IS PRIVATE SO VIEW FROM THE SHOULDER. IF YOU PARK AT THE PULL OUT YOU CAN GO DOWN THE SHOULDER AND GET GOOD VIEWS OF THE BIRDS. I have parked in the pull out many times and the locals have been around and no one has complained. But I always bird from the road.

There is one other place here in Lewis County where the SHORT-EARED OWL is fairly regular. That is the Steam/Power Plant outside of Centralia. It is a nice area to get winter ducks, though the security folks get a little testy if you are hang out in the wrong area for to long. I will not go into directions here. However if anyone wants directions contact me off line and I will gladly provide them. If anyone would like someone me to take them around to some of these areas around Centralia and Chehalis feel free to contact me off list and I would be happy to help out if I can.
