While feeding the livestock (i.e., filling the feeders and feeding
stations), I spotted DOWNY and HAIRY WOODPECKERS, and a RED-BREASTED
SAPSUCKER all feeding in the same big-leaf maple out front. Within a few
minutes, a PILEATED WOODPECKER called from across the street and flew east
over the house. When I went out back, I spooked two NORTHERN FLICKERS that
were working one of the ant areas out back. This made it the first
5-woodpecker day I've had here at the house. (Although visitors apparently
saw a Hairy Woodpecker in May '08, I'd not seen one here until today.)



Of the 38 species on the property today, some birds continue to have high
numbers, including the following:



CALIFORNIA QUAIL - 12, up from 5 that have been hanging around here since
early October

GREAT BLUE HERON - 2, up from the aperiodic one

MOURNING DOVE - 83, but likely more

DOWNY WOODPECKER - 5

STELLER'S JAY - 7

WESTERN SCRUB-JAY - 2

COMMON RAVEN - 8

BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE - 10, but likely more

RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH - 6, but likely more

MARSH WREN - 3

FOX SPARROW - 5

GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW - 17

RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD - 28, with not an adult male among them

PURPLE FINCH - 15

PINE SISKIN - 20, which is lower than usual

EVENING GROSBEAK - 40, but have had as many as 48 that I could count in
previous weeks
