Hi Shelley,

I've had similar experiences with sapsuckers. I got some pretty good
pictures of a Red-breasted Sapsucker using flash; the bird showed no
apparent concern for me although I was in plain sight. A couple years
ago in Maine I would visit a tree that was almost always frequented by
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers at a height of about 15 feet above the
ground. I could just walk right up to them and take their pictures, and
they showed no sign of fear whatsoever.
