I've been watching and photographing birds for a while (40 years +) but rarely pish or turn on a recorder, both for conservation reasons as well as the fact that it doesn't usually work for me. So after the extensive exploration of the subject matter here on Tweeters, I decided to test them in my hunt for a good image of the Golden-crowned Kinglet I needed for my bird ID classes. Having seen many over the last few years, and knowing they're fairly common around Port Townsend in the winter, I headed over to Fort Worden State Park when I saw a large area of blue sky the other day. Because I knew my time of good light would be short, I overcame my small guilt feelings and decided the time was ripe to pull out my trusty iPhone with iBird West and see if I could bring one in. There was a small flock of birds that included some Kinglets moving around the edge of the trees so I got my camera ready, turned on the iPhone and waited. Sure enough within a few seconds they moved closer. I just knew this was going to be my time for success. With my trusty camera pointed toward the bushes in front of me, I saw out of the corner of my eye a yellow flash from a small bird that leapt out of the bushes,.... and landed on my shoulder! The Kinglet took one look at my iPhone, flew down my arm back into the bushes and was not seen again. I packed my unused camera and went home. Did I just get a message?
