Tweets,
For the 2 or 3 people who haven't already gone up for this bird--yesterday David and I took our daughter up to B.C. in what we assumed would be a too-late attempt for the Northern Hawk Owl. We did not see it on our mid-morning drive into Reifel, but ran into Greg Thompson and cameras on the refuge, who reported that it usually begins hunting around 2:30. We returned to Westham Rd. at 2 p.m. Greg was there, and the owl was already obligingly perched at the top a tall deciduous tree by the yellow house (at one of the 90 degree turns approaching the refuge) It's the house w. the tennis court, on the left side of the road. Word is that it roosts in either the spruce or the hemlock during the day, coming out in the afternoon. A local reported that the home owner is getting disgusted with people pulling off the road at his house and will chase them off if he is home. Not sure what the laws are up there re. road shoulders, but it looks like he maintains a lawn almost up to the pavement edge. We were one of 3 cars parked there (including the local) but the owner was apparently not at home.

It was certainly worth the trip to Reifel, and on the way out we were able to get a Short-eared Owl perched on the Boundary Bay shore at 72nd--another for Emi's life list.
