It saddens me greatly to learn of Bob's passing.

I first met Bob when Seattle Audubon started the Puget Sound Seabird Survey
in 2007. When I put out a notice to Tweeters that summer, Bob was the first
to sign up. Once a month over three consecutive winters - rain or shine - he
collected data down at Dash Point State Park and Dumas Bay Park in south
King County, some 24 surveys in all. Bob was a fountain of invaluable
feedback and was instrumental in helping us grow the program. He attended
protocol refresher sessions every single year and was always the first to
show up, proudly donning his optics, pocket-laden vest and signature smile.
Bob was always the first to sign up for classes. When I put a call out for
volunteers to take pictures of themselves in the field, Bob, again, was the
first to send some back. Even on paper, his broad smile was contagious.

A couple years ago, Bob couldn't make the refresher session we had in
Seattle and, without hesitation, signed up for the other session a couple
days later in Tacoma. Once we wrapped up that evening, he excitedly told me
that he had received permission to spend some birthday money at Cabella's
Outdoor Store in Lacey and was on his way down that evening. He said it was
his favorite store and he was beaming from ear to ear. Come to think of it,
I never saw him any other way.

He took great pride in his work. An assignment came up recently that would
require an extra Saturday of our surveyors and Bob, appropriately, was the
first volunteer who came to mind. He was always dependable.

I could always count on his unyielding enthusiasm for birdwatching and
citizen science. He will be greatly missed.
