Go to: http://birdingonthe.net/birdmail.html scroll down to Arizona and click on it for a TWEETERS type web site for that state. You could plan to go to spots that you know are holding birds of interest to you from posted sightings instead of exploring sites that may not be very birdy yet. Most of the canyons are high elevation and many of the Arizona species have migrated South for the winter. There is better birding along rivers and other lower elevation hot-spots, many species winter in Arizona so at this time of the year there are flocks of sparrows, longspurs, hawk concentrations and and wintering rarities that are usually seen nearly every day in the same locations. If you only have a few days you might not want to spend time traveling and would concentrate on the specialty birds near Phoenix such as LeConte's Thrasher west of town. The Gilbert Wetlands is another nearby birding area that usually has plenty of birds . You can GOOGLE "Arizonia Birding" and get some more information. The "Birding Southeast Arizona" book does not cover Phoenix but there is a "Birding Maricopa County" book, I don't know if it has been updated since I still use a old copy.
