HI Cleo

I live in South Surrey, British Columbia, close to the US border. I had a
banded female Northern Flicker show up at my feeder on Christmas Day. I
took pictures and followed up with a friend of mine who is a master bander
and he did some searching and found out who was banding Flickers. My bird
(which is still around) has on its left leg a silver band in the bottom and
a bright pink band on top. The right leg has an orange band on the bottom
with a blue band on top. The coloured bands are plastic.

I found out that my bird was banded in the central interior of BC. The lady
that banded the bird was Karen Wiebe who is a Associate Professor at the
University of Saskatchewan but she grew up near where I now live and I knew
her many years ago when she was student at a local university. I have
copied her on this email as your bird may also be one of her birds as the
colour banding combinations appear similar.

Karen has passed on the information about my bird as follows:

that this particular flicker, was a yearling breeder, and was banded in
May 2008 near Riske Creek, which is just west of Williams Lake on Highway
20. Her nesting attempt was successful, and she fledged 7 our of 8 hatched
nestlings. Interestingly, she was not resighted last summer (2009) although
her banded male mate returned and nested with a new female, in the same tree
the pair used in 2008 - she comments that even birds go through divorces!!

I would be interested to hear about your bird and its history, as I am
writing a short piece for our local birding newsletter The Wandering Tattler
about this interesting woopecker.

Whose banding Flickers??? U banded an old freind of ours as we believe he
was here last year and he is rather tame. He is a Red Shafted, red cheek
patch and a red "V" mark on his nape. On his Right leg he has two bands
marked silver/orange and on the Left leg he has two bands blue/orange. This
is the 21st of FEB at 11AM in Anacortes WA. After lunch there appeared a
similiar marked bird but no bands. For more info and possible picutres feel
free to contact me.
