After the first RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD that we have had at our feeders showed up this morning (2/21/10) Susan and I decided to go look for other migrants. At the St. Cloud Ranch recreation Area in Skamania County we had a male NORTHERN GOSHAWK. We found a male AMERICAN KESTREL at Bonneville Dam but few other birds. There were large numbers of coots and waterfowl on Rock Creek Cove, on the west side of Stevenson. We tried to find a better view of them from the Gorge Interpretive Center grounds and there is a good spot where you can see the birds from the edge of the lawn but our best find was a SAY'S PHOEBE in the trees on the lawn. We ended up the day by checking the Catherine Creek Nature Conservancy Reserve and Balch Road areas. Everybody and their dog were at Catherine Creek enjoying the sun and early wildflowers including Columbia Lomatium and Grass Widows. We found WESTERN BLUEBIRDS at the first site and 3 LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS and an ACORN WOODPECKER on the Balch Road and Old Highway 8 granary tree.
