After spending three early mornings photographing the Peregrines snacking on Mac-Dunlins at the usual place on Bay View Edison Road in Skagit County (meeting and greeting most of the big lens photographers in Western Washington) we traveled up Highway 20 to the rest stop overlooking Diablo Lake within a few miles of its closure and saw 8-10 Red Crossbills feeding on the constructed rock sides of the pit toilets that were in the sun. They seemed to be working their bills into the various cracks where the mortar joined the rocks together. Anyone have any idea what they were feeding on?
