On the final day of 2009 I ran down to Lake Sammamish State Park to
see if there were any Garganeys. Out on the "delta" of Issaquah Creek
the local Dunlin flock had several individuals walking through the
weeds and grabbing flying insects. The shorebirds seemed to have a
good capture average, but their prey needed to be flying quite low as
the Dunlin don't seem to have much of a vertical leap.
We're currently in South Dakota for a wedding. It got down to -28
last night. I had forgotten what that feels like.
