We were at Howarth Park in Everett today doing a seabird survey and saw a
strange looking merganser with a male red-breasted merganser. The bird had
a very obvious, fairly thick ring of black feathers completely surrounding
the eyes and a vertical black bar which appeared to go from the chin down
the neck to tannish breast feathers. The bar had white on either side. The
rest of the bird looked like a female merganser. Do juvenile red-breasted
mergansers look anything like this?
