Subject: [Tweeters] First bird of 2010?

Like Devorah I no longer have a NW location...but I lurk. I had a double first bird as I saw an Anna's Hummingbird divebombing an invading Townsend's Warbler at the feeder on my back deck. These are two of the most common birds I have here in the East Bay foothills - other very common birds are Steller's Jay (unexpectedly far more common than Western Scrub Jay), California Towhee, and Black Phoebe (many who daily patrol the areas around the flood lights for insects attracted the evening before). Turkey Vultures, Red Tailed Hawk and Golden Eagle are also surprising regulars soaring above. I also have a Cooper's Hawk who seems to eat far more mammals (young Fox Squirrels and Rats of all sorts (ick) ) than birds - though I saw her yesterday with a Robin just at eye level in the oaks off of the deck.

> what was the first bird that you saw in 2010? what significance does this species have for you (if any)?
>
> my first bird of 2010 was a beautiful, very pale Peregrine Falcon that soared at eye-level past the window of my new home, a flat on the 13th floor of an apartment building in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. my spouse's first bird of 2010 was a European (Common) Magpie that landed on the roof of the hotel swimming pool next door. these first birds of 2010 suggest a new and exciting life ahead for me.
