More probably inconvenient San Juan Islands locations: I've seen
Harlequins a couple of times in the shallows close to the campground
on the west side of Turn Island when kayaking there. Probably in
spring, but I haven't kept records of dates. This area can be scoped
from a public beach on Pear Point Rd, San Juan Island, but for photos
you'd need to go over to Turn. It's a pretty nice little campground,
and if the ducks are there, you should be able to get close to them.
Be careful if rowing or paddling across to Turn, since there can be
fast current through there, and rough water on the other side of the
island near Turn Rock.

I've also seen them more than once at Iceberg Pt. on Lopez. Probably
a less-than-ideal spot for photos, as there is no cover very near the
water, unless you bring a portable blind. It is about a mile hike out
from the road (not exactly sure where to park, as I've always arrived
there by kayak). On the upside, I've had Marbled Murrelets there near
shore several times, and a puffin twice, IIRC, (which would be about
15% of my several brief passages through there) so if you happen to be
on Lopez, it might be worth a trip.
